June Update
“The good neighbor looks beyond the external accidents and discerns those inner qualities that make all men human and, therefore, brothers.”
—Martin Luther King, Jr.
“I DIDN’T KNOW I NEEDED THAT….”
Sheila was away caring for her elderly mother when the call came. What followed were words no wife ever wants to hear: “Your house is burning to the ground — and we do not know where your husband is.”
Sheila’s husband, Jake, was home alone when he noticed a spark in the garage around 6:00 p.m. He was trying to stop the fire with a garden hose when he slipped and fell. His recent knee and shoulder injuries left him unable to recover quickly. Thankfully, a neighbor called 911 for him. When firefighters arrived, they pulled Jake to safety and began fighting the flames. Sheila rushed home, though it felt like the longest ten-minute drive of her life. Grateful that they had both survived, the gravity of the vast damage to their home soon set in.
They reached out to ADRN—and thanks to good neighbors like you—we were ready to help and scheduled an intake appointment for Jake and Sheila.
When they arrived, Sheila shared that they had been running late, so she told Jake they needed to hurry. Jake had responded, “It’s okay—they’re family, because they’re helping us.”
The fact that Jake felt so confident before meeting anyone on our team spoke volumes and really left an impression on our hearts. In the middle of loss and uncertainty, they encountered not just tangible assistance, but the kind of compassionate care that made them feel seen, safe, and welcomed.
They shared practical needs like clearing sheetrock, electrical work, general supplies, and air duct cleaning. And along with the physical help they needed, more importantly, Jake and Sheila also found care for their hearts.
After we prayed with them, Jake said, “I didn’t know I needed that [prayer] as much as I did.”
