Sponsor a Family

ADRN’s primary goal is to sponsor families affected by disaster, great or small. Join us and help families experiencing loss from the recent flooding and fires as we continue our mission “…till every family is sponsored.” Our sponsors are called Disaster Relief Shepherds (DRS). The Disaster Relief Shepherd (DRS) is one of the most important roles a volunteer can play within their church in times of disaster. The DRS job is to be willing to walk along side a family that has potentially lost everything and needs a Good Samaritan to be there for them through the process of recovery until their feet are back on the ground. This training will equip you with the skills, knowledge and plan to take care of and provide extended assistance to survivors, the type of assistance that is difficult for governments and international relief agencies to give.

What a Shepherd IS

  • A non-judgmental listener
  • An intercessor, who prays with and for the family
  • A coach, helping them think through problems and establish a plan
  • A connector, of resources with needs
  • A spiritual caseworker, empowering the family to once again be self-sustaining
  • A champion, who advocates on their behalf to others who want to help

What a shepherd is NOT

  • Expected to have all the answers
  • Personally liable for the well-being of the family
  • Responsible to replace everything the family lost
  • Responsible for doing what the family can and should do for themselves
  • Expected to have the family live in their home
  • Expected to help them beyond what has been affected by the disaster

Please read the following information to find out how you can help, what is required and where to attend training to sponsor a family in need.

Requirements To Sponsor a Family

If you are NOT already an ADRN volunteer, follow these steps:

  1. Each person interested in sponsoring a family, must be part of a Christian church within the Greater Austin area.
  2. If you are a member of one of the churches but not an ADRN volunteer, please review the DRS training dates offered below, fill out the form below to reserve your seat and then select an ADRN Upcoming Orientation in the same form to attend following your DRS training course (Orientation is recommended, but not required). NOTE: If your church is not on the network, but you would like to inform your church about how to join our network in order to begin sponsoring families, click here.
  3. Complete an ADRN background check online. This only takes 2-3 minutes, and is required to sponsor a family. Please bring your background check report with you to the DRS Training you attend.

If you ARE an ADRN volunteer, follow these steps:

  1. View the course dates below as a first time volunteer attending to train as a DRS or to attend as a refresher course.
  2. Login to register from the Training Calendar or from the VOLUNTEER LOGIN.
  3. Complete an ADRN background check online. This only takes 2-3 minutes, and is required to sponsor a family. Please bring your background check report with you to the DRS Training you attend.

IMPORTANT: To become an official ADRN Volunteer, the ADRN Orientation & Preparedness Training must be completed. It is our most basic training (3 hrs) dedicated to personal preparedness, introducing ADRN (what God is doing in this city) and the role God is leading each member to take. Everyone who attends will receive a yellow badge, an opportunity to obtain a yellow shirt for deployment, a pathway to pursue advanced training and will be included on critical ADRN deployment communications.
