ADRN Training: Suitable for Daily Disasters

by Michael Tummillo  |  Founder, The Church @ Work Feb 17, 2014  I’ve served as a Workplace Chaplain – a Circuit Preacher – for nearly 8 years, my ministry originally being directed toward the over 500 employees for a Texas nursing home chain scattered from Baird to Sherman, Itasca to Grand Saline and points in-between. As the years have passed, an increasing amount of my ministry has begun to include the Residents at these facilities, too, often called to my attention by the staff who’ve come to know me. These employees consist of low-income individuals, in most cases. Many of the Residents are poor people, too. I’ve come to see this mountain of poverty-stricken folks as nothing less than another brigade of soldiers in the Lord’s Army, in need of equipping and encouragement. The training I’ve received through the Austin Disaster Relief Network (ADRN) has been a great “tool” in my toolbox since my affiliation with ADRN. Last Thanksgiving, preferring to serve at a church dinner rather than just stuff my own face, I contacted the Salvation Army in Brownwood and asked if they needed assistance. I wound up going to their Thanksgiving dinner along with ten people from my…

Ruth’s Story

Ruth’s Story: A Central Texas Flood Survivor’s Story Ruth was renting a house at 5109 Savorey Lane at the time of the flooding. She woke up at 5:00 am that morning to discover water already rising in her home. Her son and a friend were also in the home. After she woke them, they helped her to get out through a window. A neighbor saw them exiting their home and had them get on the back of their truck, barely escaping the rising waters. Ruth lost everything, and was especially troubled by the loss of her photos. She had been the one in the family to keep photos, and didn’t have a way to replace them. She found a new place to live in Del Valle, and is getting on with her life. She continues to work at the Big Lots in Oak Hill.   With the love and support of one of ADRN’s network churches, The Lake Travis Church of Christ, Ruth received emotional and spiritual care through her Disaster Relief Shepherd (DRS) to help her get back on her feet. ADRN and The Lake Travis Church of Christ, assisted her in getting a new mattress set, and with $500 given towards…

KOHL’s Associates Deliver

We would like to thank KOHL’s who brought together over 52 associates from various stores through out the state to come in and help ADRN at our HOPE FAMILY THRIFT STORE. Stores represented were the following: Georgetown, North Austin, Leander, Killeen, Temple, Sunset Valley, Round Rock, Kyle and a few associates traveled from the district office out of Houston. The volunteers helped sort, price and itemize clothing to help us move donated items, given by the community, on to the floor, providing flood survivors with more items to select from while shopping. We are thankful for partners in the community like KOHL’s and others who continue to give of their time to others who are in great need.  ADRN is donating items to flood survivors to help meet their immediate needs following the Memorial Weekend floods affecting various counties throughout the area. To date, ADRN has given away over $10,000 in clothing to flood survivors. To volunteer with ADRN at our Thrift Store, visit our site.
