AUSTIN DISASTER RELIEF NETWORK CALLS FOR SUPPORT FOR GULF COAST NEIGHBORS AS SECOND HURRICANE SLAMS INTO LOUISIANA COAST
Austin, TX, October 12, 2020 – With the second hurricane in six weeks hitting the Louisiana coast line, the
Austin Disaster Relief Network redoubles its response efforts on behalf of our Gulf Coast neighbors in need.
Hurricane Delta, a Category 2 storm, slammed into the same communities devastated by Hurricane Laura in late August. Damaging winds and several inches of rain from Delta have deepened the crisis for residents still reeling from losing homes and businesses in Laura’s wake.
“I urge everyone in our network of churches and the entire Greater Austin community to come alongside our
Louisiana neighbors,” said Daniel Geraci, ADRN Executive Director. “These families already needed a huge
amount of help rebuilding safe and clean homes to live in after Hurricane Laura. Now that Delta has passed
through, they need even more assistance with emergency funds, supplies, and long-term help to clean-up and rebuild. Most importantly, they need hope to face this crisis and get through it, and we can bring that hope to them.”
HOW YOU CAN HELP
ADRN is already collecting Care Kits for families and individuals in the area, as well as operating the Hurricane Laura Relief Fund to provide financial assistance for survivors. Both of these efforts will continue with resources supporting people impacted by Hurricane Delta as well. Greater Austin residents can donate online and find details on how to assemble a Care Kit at ADRN.org.
ADRN is in close contact with partner organizations in the region as they assess the needs of Louisiana
residents. The network of trained and badged volunteers stands ready to provide additional support to Hurricane Laura and Delta survivors as the situation warrants.
Hundreds of thousands remain without power in Hurricane Delta’s wake, and debris scattered from the storm has set back recovery efforts that were underway following Hurricane Laura. ADRN sent two semis of Care Kits and emergency supplies to Lake Charles in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura, and distributed funds in the form of gift cards for gas and food to evacuees. Several teams from Austin churches partnered with organizations on the ground to begin clean-up efforts and provide meals for people picking up the pieces of their lives following Hurricane Laura. ADRN trained volunteers, known as “yellow shirts,” continue to provide emotional, physical, and spiritual support to Hurricane Laura evacuees still in Central Texas.
