Times of Disaster – How We Help

Austin Disaster Relief Network (ADRN) is a network of churches and trained volunteers who partner with businesses, ministries, and local sources who share a passion for helping others in times of great need.

Through our network of churches, businesses, and volunteers, ADRN responds to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of individuals and families impacted by disaster.

In times of crisis, ADRN’s Call Center (Survivor Hotline: 512.806.0800) and trained volunteers deploy to meet the immediate and long-term needs of those affected in our community.

Our primary goal is to walk families impacted by disasters through the recovery process (from start to finish) through our unique Shepherd Program.

Additionally, in times of disaster, ADRN coordinates resources, organizes response efforts, and deploys trained and badged volunteers to provide emergency assistance services to those impacted. Services provided may include:

  1. Temporary shelter within churches on the network
  2. Warehousing and the distribution of goods
  3. Emotional and spiritual care (crisis intervention) through CISM-trained volunteers and Chaplains
  4. Emergency Call Center ( Survivor Hotline and General Info 512.806.0800) Monday-Friday, 9 am - 4 pm.
  5. Clean-up and muck-out teams
  6. Volunteer management
  7. Long-term care aimed at meeting survivors' emotional, spiritual and physical needs (through our Shepherd Program)
  8. Emergency financial support for food, clothing, supplies, emergency housing, and emergency transportation

During times of disaster, volunteers are greatly needed to help in various areas of ADRN's response. Teams may include trained and non-trained volunteers.

ADRN Trained Volunteers: Working through our network of churches, we've trained thousands of volunteers to provide physical, emotional, and spiritual support to those affected by disaster. ADRN-trained volunteers, also known as yellow shirts, receive a badge and the credentials needed to deploy on the disaster field. Click here to become an ADRN Volunteer.

Community Volunteers: During a deployment, community volunteers, businesses, youth groups, organizations, and churches provide physical support where needed. This support may include clean-up (mucking out houses and clearing debris), warehouse support, and/or assistance in ADRN's Hope Family Thrift Store where families who've lost everything come for shoes, clothing, goods, and supplies. We DO NOT require community volunteers to be part of a church on ADRN's network. Click here for volunteer opportunities.

To help maximize volunteer hours donated to disaster efforts, some corporations offer Corporate Matching Programs often making donations based on the number of hours their employees volunteer with a local non-profit organization. View more on HOW YOU CAN HELP.

Donations of both monetary and in-kind gifts are greatly needed during and immediately after both major and minor disasters. Your gifts help us assist families impacted by meeting their immediate and long-term needs.

ADRN and our network of churches in Greater Austin are committed to walking with survivors all the way through the recovery process, from the moment we meet them until they are back on their feet and in safe and clean homes. This process can last 3-4 months and up to 1-2 years depending on the severity of each person's situation and the level of devastation experienced.

ADRN's Shepherd Program connects families in need of support with a church on our network along with trained Shepherd Volunteers who walk alongside them each step of the way, meeting their emotional, physical, and spiritual needs.

Each survivor is also given short-term financial assistance in the form of gift cards to cover immediate expenses such as hotel bills, gas, food, clothing, etc.

They are also assisted with long-term support which may include clean-up and muck-out services and the repairing/rebuilding of homes. (This phase is where funding is greatly needed.)

After the initial response to the disaster, often, agencies that respond first leave within the first two weeks to a month. ADRN is there for the long haul, managing ongoing volunteer efforts, coordinating the work of organizations helping with rebuilds, providing building materials (through funds received), and ultimately helping families get back into safe and clean homes.

Warehouses are also opened to collect in-kind items and donations to help families furnish their homes and provide them with other necessities such as clothing, shoes, cleaning supplies, kitchen and household items, etc.
