San Marcos Fire Response – July 24

San Marcos Students Find Hope in Recovery

August 14, 2018 Austin, TX – Austin Disaster Relief Network (ADRN) continues to assist individuals (mostly students) impacted by the San Marcos Fires affecting over 100 units (approx. 200 people) and taking five lives on July 20th. ADRN continues to provide hope in the midst of recovery and meet the needs of those seeking assistance. To date, ADRN and our network of churches have responsed: 88 survivors (mostly college students) provided with Emotional and Spiritual care, given emergency financial assistance, prayed with and offered to be connected to a local church to walk with them (sponsored) 47 survivors initially requested sponsorship A gathering of Pastors was held at Promiseland, San Marcos on July 25 and pastors along with their churches united to respond to the need 2 Shepherd trainings were held in San Marcos 32 survivors have been matched with a shepherd, most of which are from that area but some from other parts of Greater Austin. 2 survivors await to be shepherded (some of the initial 47 no longer have need) DONATIONS NEEDED ADRN has distributed $17,600 in gift cards to help meet the emergency needs of these survivors; Approximately $5,500 has been raised for our General Relief fund…

Donated Guitar Brings Hope After Harvey

August 18, 2018, Rockport, Texas – ADRN Hurricane Harvey Relief John Gonzalez played guitar in the New Beginnings Church praise band in Rockport, Texas. The sanctuary was heavily damaged from the impact of Hurricane Harvey. Both of John’s guitars, one electric and one acoustic, were inside the sanctuary at the time and received damage beyond repair. ADRN developed a partnership with New Beginnings Church in Rockport following Hurricane Harvey when ADRN put into place a Mobile Thrift Store offering clothing, shoes, disaster supplies and more for the community. It was through this relationship and ongoing effort that John’s story surfaced. Austin Disaster Relief Network (ADRN) had recently received a special donated guitar signed by music artist Shania Twain, a Canadian singer and songwriter who has sold over 100 million records, making her the best-selling female artist in country music history. Thomas, an ADRN Disaster Relief Shepherd Coordinator, matched the donated guitar to John’s need. On Friday, August 18, 2018, Thomas made his way to Rockport from Austin, Texas with the donated guitar. John was overwhelmed with the gift! He immediately tuned the guitar and started playing a hymn. Floods: ADRN Response Update

ADRN FIELD UPDATE/NEEDS: 105 homes with major flood damage in three areas within Travis County (Thoroughbred Farms area, Dove Springs and Tucker Hill/River Road) Families are asking ADRN for gift cards, hotel vouchers and beyond so minimally we are estimating to spend $50k over the next 3-5 days to support emergency needs of survivors ADRN teams are deployed in the field assisting survivors, providing emotional care and meeting their immediate financial needs. HAM Radio teams are in the field for communication efforts Logistics and ADRN leadership are coordinating additional volunteer opportunities to relieve some of the teams in the field.
