Austin, TX, August 31, 2020 – The Austin Disaster Relief Network calls on the Greater Austin Community to help their Gulf Coast neighbors in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura. An estimated 10,000 properties in Louisiana and Texas weathered sustained winds of at least 110 mph in the major storm. The cost of repairing damaged homes adds to the already difficult economic situation brought on by COVID-19. In light of the overwhelming need, ADRN urges people to help those impacted by the storm to get back on their feet by donating to the Hurricane Laura Relief Fund.
“Those who’ve lost everything in this disaster will need emergency funding for immediate housing and transportation as well as long-term help with cleaning up and rebuilding,” ADRN Executive Director Daniel Geraci said. “We’ve seen the Austin community step up in tremendous ways to help their neighbors in times of disaster in the past. We believe that the people of Austin can do it again.”
Monies from the Hurricane Laura Relief Fund will be distributed in the form of gift cards to cover emergencies like gas and groceries, and funding for cleaning and rebuilding homes. To make a tax-deductible donation to support disaster survivors, go to ADRN.org.
CARE KITS – ADRN is also collecting Care Kits to distribute to Hurricane Laura survivors with a goal of shipping 5,000 kits to the affected areas. These kits contain emergency supplies like toiletries, towels, blankets, and pillows – items that individuals and families need when they’ve lost everything in a disaster. ADRN also encourages people to include an encouraging note to the recipients to help lift their spirits in a time of crisis. Care Kit Assembly instructions are available to download at ADRN.org.
Care Kits can be customized for men, women, and families with children. Once assembled, people can drop off the completed kits at one of three convenient locations:
• Central: Hope Thrift Store, 1122 E. 51st Street, Austin TX, Monday-Saturday 10 AM – 5 PM (closed on Sunday)
• Southwest: Life Austin Church, 8901 TX-71, Austin TX, Monday-Friday 9 AM – 12 PM
